UAAM Week packed with events

Members of Genesis Chapter of UAAM
The Genesis chapter of United Afrikan-Amerikan Men, Inc. sponsored UAAM Week Feb. 16-21 on the campus of Grambling State University.
“UAAM Week is a time to reflect on the mission, purpose and ideals upon which they were founded upon,” Kyron Johnson, a senior criminal justice major from Bastrop, La., said. “It is a time to celebrate and join in fellowship with members as well as highlight the accomplishment of our chapter.”
United Afrikan-Amerikan Men, Inc. (UAAM), whose motto is “The Revolution is Us,” is a non-Greek organization founded upon the principles of liberation, self-determination, brotherhood, academic excellence, and ultimately the upliftment of the black community.
Founded on the campus of Grambling State University on Feb. 18, 1993, the organization currently has six chapters on select university campuses throughout northeast Louisiana and Texas.
Johnson said the organization’s expectation for the week was to celebrate and reflect on their accomplishments on campus, as well as to host different events to show students and prospective members what UAAM is all about.
On Sunday, Feb. 16, the brothers of United African-American worshipped together at the Zion Traveler Baptist Church in Ruston.
On Monday, Feb. 17, the organization participated in a dorm walk, picking up trash throughout the dorms on campus.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the organization hosted a “Know Your History” event the Favrot Student Union building.
On Feb. 19, the organization hosted a “Healthy U” seminar offering important tips on how students can become healthier versions of themselves.
The organization hosted a Founder’s Day Party on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Venue of Ruston. Entertainment for the event included DJ Cam and DJ Ky.
UAAM concluded UAAM Week with a “Malcolm X Effect” at Eddie the Tiger on Friday, Feb. 21.
