CMAST program offers bright future

The Center of Academic Excellence in Mathematical Achievement for Science and Technology (CMAST) at Grambling State University is broadening its program to serve neglected communities with high poverty rates.

CMAST is focused on preparing our future STEM leaders for the world.

CMAST provides training across STEM disciplines to analyze large amounts of data to solve business related problems.

CMAST exemplifies the importance of science, technology, engineering and math within communities and settings who are not equipped with the right resources.

“They provide leadership opportunities, soft skills and research opportunities for students to advance and became more skilled in their field,” CMAST student Ashton Myers said.

Young girls and boys, in K-12 outreach, are now witnessing the growth and widespread of different programs presented from CMAST.

Current Grambling students will receive recognition and credentials for their future workforce in addition to certificates for all their hard work.

Part of CMAST’s purpose is to provide services that will expand the academic experience for STEM students to ensure that graduates are highly competitive and prepared for success in the global workforce.

This is a great way to gain not only future STEM students but to produce even more HBCU graduates ready to enter the STEM workforce.

“CMAST is also beneficial, because the program provides scholarships and aid in book opportunities,” Myers said.

“CMAST also gives you the opportunity to become a research student, academic coach, or tutor to help students gain experience. It’s a win-win, I love it! “

The program prepares students by instilling them with knowledge and hope.

Each and every day students endure strenuous obstacles that may discourage or even demoralize them from their chosen path, but CMAST helps and pushes them to their full potential. It gives them a sense of grounding and stability to pursue whichever career they like.

In addition, prospective students will witness what great lengths this program will go to ensure the readiness of its students.

CMAST sponsors activities that are designed to support the academic success of students pursuing a STEM undergraduate degree at Grambling State University.

These degree programs include biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering technology, mathematics and physics.

Within the program students have opportunities  to apply for scholarships, textbook awards and to attend conferences across the U.S.

The center is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

CMAST currently has a focus on “big data” science skills, which is a growing workforce need.

The CMAST program also holds a variety of events.

On Nov. 5, CMAST held a soft skills training forum.

In addition to this forum, they had a guest speaker, Shakira Hardinson. who gave out important information pertaining to soft skills.

CMAST also holds tutoring sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. in Carver Hall, Room 107 in the Curriculum Resource & STEM Academic Success Center.
