Almost every year for homecoming the Favrot Student Union Board puts on a mock funeral for the campus to experience.

On Friday, Nov. 1, the Favrot Student Union Board hosted a mock funeral in the Yard for the Texas Southern University.

The mock funeral was followed by a repast in the McCall Dining Hall.

The mock funeral and repast was a part honor of this year’s homecoming festivities.

The mock funeral has become a tradition at Grambling State University.

The funeral symbolizes the defeat of the opposing football team at the homecoming game.

“The purpose of the funeral is to mock the opposing team and create more Tiger Pride during homecoming,” Arshauna Candler, a native of San Diego, Cailf. and President of the Favrot Student Union Board, said.

The mock funeral featured honorary pallbearers, a live band and a sermon.

“I was a pallbearer and son of the rival team,” Larry Gipson II, a sophomore history major from Fellowship, La., said.

“I was excited to participate because I love being able to be as free and wild I can be, being in the funeral you definitely have to be out of your comfort zone because everyone is watching you act a fool,” Gipson said.

Like previous mock funerals, students participated as emotional funeral mourners.

The fake family definitely set the atmosphere for the funeral.

The mock funeral was scheduled at the same time as the pep rally for a solid turnout.

A repast followed the funeral in the McCall Dining Hall with musical selections by DJ Twins.

The funeral and repast another successful event organized by the Favrot Student Union Board during homecoming week.

The fun event was a method to get students, alumni and faculty excited about this year’s homecoming game against the Texas Southern University Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the Robinson Stadium.

The Favrot Student Union Board are already making plans for next year’s mock funeral.

Plans include more actors dressing up as mourners and fake obituaries.
