One of the aspects that is often fantasized about when thinking about college, especially HBCUs, is Greek life.

On Oct. 1 the Alpha Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. collaborated to host Meet the Greeks on The Quad.

Though the event is not completely new, it is new to Grambling’s campus. Students who had little to no knowledge about fraternities and sororities in the Divine 9 is the target audience..

“A lot of freshmen come to campus… they’re stuck on a lot of things because they hear a lot,” said Jessica Clinton, senior and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “The thought process was that...we can hurry up and get this underway before the semester ends. We wanted students to come out to engage with us and see different organizations.”

Many students said they felt like the event was helpful because they had the opportunity to ask questions about what the organization is about.

“It was really inviting,” Jamya Drayden, a freshman, said. “It [allowed] you to see what they do inside of the organization, and it show[ed] you how close-knit the sisterhood or brotherhood is.”

Some say the event even helped kill the stereotypes of students who “become Greek”.

The message for the student body to take away from the event is that even though wearing “letters” and strolling is fun, it is all about service and the life-long sisterhood or brotherhood.
