The newest members of #GramFam were welcomed by various fun activities and events hosted by the Favrot Student Union Board (FSUB). This year’s Welcome Week theme was “Return of the Roar”.

The purpose of Welcome Week is to give the incoming freshmen a chance to get acquainted with the campus and each other as well as get a glimpse of what the rest of the school year has to offer. Student leaders and faculty try to make this huge transition as welcoming and smooth as possible for the freshmen.

“It is important for the freshmen to feel like [Grambling is] their home away from home. We want to be able to make them feel comfortable and prepared by the time classes begin,” LaJazzmond Pichon, FSUB President and senior Mass Communication major from Houston, said.

Things kicked off on Monday, Aug. 12, with the Freshman 101 panel and supply giveaway in the Black and Gold room. Five panelists made up of upperclassmen student leaders answered questions and provided advice to the new incoming freshmen. Topics ranged from Greek life, roommate issues, classes, and stress relievers.  #GramFam23 also received a Grambling bag filled with different supplies such as toilet paper, pencils, scantrons, etc.

The following day was the movie night where students watched “Don’t Breathe” in the Black and Gold room theater. The movie was chosen by most popular vote via social media. They were provided with the entire movie theatre experience from the sound, to the snacks to the excitement.

Things got a tad bit more lively on Wednesday as FSUB hosted the “Who’s Who of GSU” party in the Black and Gold room. The very commonly used hashtag has been a tool used to get to know classmates and peers via Twitter. As students entered the atrium, they were given name tags to write their social media usernames on along with glow in the dark bracelets indicating their relationship status by colors.

The amusement continued into Thursday with the yard show titled “Who Runs the Yard?”. DJ Twins started the event off with a music intermission.

“The event turnout was great. It looked like almost everyone on campus at that time was on the yard,” Linneka Watson, Publicity and Communication chair of FSUB and a junior from Memphis, said.  “There was barely enough space for the actual performers. Students from other schools were also in attendance, making the crowd even larger.”

Greeks and non-Greeks performed a six minute show to introduce their organization to the freshmen and show them who runs the yard. In between performances and at the end of the show, organizations flooded the middle of the yard to begin strolling.

To close out the week, FSUB hosted a “Slip & Slide” water play day.

The Quad was covered in inflatable water slides and water games including water kickball. It was a great way to beat the heat and finish out Welcome Week.

“During Welcome Week, I met a lot of new people and made a few friends!” Kyauna Galimore, a freshman from Shreveport, said. “The environment was very welcoming and “lit”. It felt like I belonged! I also liked all the different activities that were planned for us to get to know our class and other people.”
