SYNOPSIS: “In the midst of the Jim Crow era and having faced the cruelty of racism and segregation, Herb Simmons always believed he would soar above the conditions and surroundings that are designed to keep one economically, politically, and socially bound, caged in poverty, hopelessness, and despair. Thus the title of Herb’s autobiography, ‘Got Two Wings’, captures the essence of how he was able to rise in spite of his conditions, circumstances and surroundings” 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Dr. Simmons has held a number of high profile positions including Under Secretary for the Louisiana Department of Social Services in Governor Buddy Roemer’s Administration · Lectured at colleges and universities, consumer organizations, and churches nationwide · Featured several times in Jet Magazine · Appeared on CBS’s Sixty Minutes hosted by the late Ed Bradley · Headed the Office of Consumer Protection in Washington D.C. under Mayor Marion Berry · Harvard Law University Professor · First African American Lafayette Regional Airport Commissioner and Chairman · Co-founder and Chairman of Greater North Louisiana Community Development Corporation (GNLCDC), and orchestrated the construction of Sleep Inn Hotel, subdivision of forty homes, sixteen handicap accessible apartments, ten townhouses, small business learning center, and more…which have “Greatly improved the economic, social, and visual landscape,” ~Mayor Leslie Thompson, Jonesboro, LA. Currently, Dr. Simmons is a full-time, tenured professor at his alma mater, Grambling State University in the Department of Criminal Justice and is President of the GSU Faculty Senate.
