Junior Jonathon Sawyer (left) is number one in the 400-meter dash in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Participating in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Grambling States University’s Jonathon Sawyer is the only track athlete to hold a top spot in the conference.
Sawyer covered the 400-meter dash in 46.50 seconds to win the Jim Mize Invitational at Louisiana Tech University.
Following a personal best performance at Louisiana tech, Sawyer, a native of Austin, Texas, took over the No. 1 rank atop the SWAC Performance List in the 400-meter dash.
This is just the latest in string of first place wins for Sawyer. He also finished first in the 400-meter dash the Texas State Invitational Sawyer with a time of 46.47and at the Mississippi College Opener to kick off the season with a time of 46.93.
After the Louisiana Tech performance Sawyer was named the SWAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Sawyer saw his results at Louisiana Tech as the best performance of all time since the beginning of his athletic career.
At the meet Sawyer also set a personal best record of 21.41 seconds for a 200 meters dash in which he finished sixth. In addition, he aided the Tigers to claim third place in the 4 by 400-meter relay.
Notably, motivated by all his tough experiences in several athletic events, Sawyer’s love for the track has grown from his success in sports activities.
“I love track so much, I wasn’t really focused on track until college but my success in this sport has made me grown to love it,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer works very hard at what he does and is not yet satisfied with his performance. He is eying the SWAC Championships.
“I know am going to continue keep working hard, and putting in the extra work I need to stand out,” Sawyer stated.
Deondria Taylor, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, is also another outstanding athlete on the GSU’s track team.
“Everything that’s coming his way and the position he’s in he worked for and it’s well deserved.” Taylor said of her “Big Brother” as she calls him.
