Miss Black and Gold, Faith Pittman, was recognized by BEYA for her work on-campus as a student leader.
The junior chemistry major serves as a student leader for the Department of Chemistry, the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Chemist and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), Chemistry Club and the Center for Mathematical Achievement in Science and Technology (CMAST).
“In NOBCChE, I am the current president and within CMAST, I serve as a student-researcher,” Pittman said. “I, of course, am apart of any programs CMAST has because Mrs. Akins wants us to be involved not only on campus, but in the community.”
As the 2018-2018 Miss Black and Gold for the Delta Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Pittman said this award promote her platform of emphasizes education and development. The Texas native transferred to Grambling State University in the summer of 2017.
“Looking at my path to now only speaks to excel in academics and mature into who God has ordained me to be,” Pittman said. “It was difficult adjusting from a PWI to an HBCU, yet, I have had my greatest growing moments and successes here.”
This year, Pittman’s work has included STEM outreach for K-12 students, raising $1,000 and more than 420 pounds of food donations for the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana. Pittman assisted Enausha Abney with the coordination of a haunted house through Carver Hall in November.
“Abney literally put the team on her back,” Pittman said, “It was amazing. Hopefully, in the future we can have a Grambling food bank to sew back into our local community.”
Pittman recently secured an internship with global pharmaceutical leader, Eli Lilly. Her future plans include becoming an orthopedic surgeon and opening a private practice.
“I have to be the boss of my life,” Pittman said. “I am also very family oriented, so I definitely would like to have a God-centered marriage and a household full of little scholar-athletes.”
Pittman also plans to give back to the university and has interest in investing in real estate.
