Mother of Trayvon Martin to speak at Women’s History Convocation

Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton will deliver the keynote address at the 2019 Grambling State University Women’s History Convocation.

GSU’s Women’s History Convocation will be held at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21. 

Fulton has become an social activist for change since her son’s tragic death and has evolved into an unwavering force against racial inequality. Fulton established the Trayvon Martin Foundation in 2012 following her son’s murder to senseless gun violence. The foundation is a platform used to address social injustice, racial profiling and rampant gun violence. 

Fulton has also teamed up with 22-time Grammy winner and executive producer, Jay-Z, to develop the six part docu-series “Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” in the summer of 2017. 

Fulton has spoke on her social justice work at many events, including the 2018 Commencement Convocation at Benedict College where she was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and a key to the city of Columbia, S.C. 

“Mrs. Fulton is an important voice for social change today,” GSU President Rick Gallot said in a statement. “We are excited for our students to witness her example of how we can all champion progress for our community.”

Fulton has another son, Jahvaris, and is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Fulton received a bachelor’s degree in English and communications from Florida Memorial University.
