The Grambling State University women’s tennis team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a 4-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday, Feb. 22.
GSU (1-4 overall, 1-0 SWAC) cruised to the SWAC win notching victories at No. 5, No. 6, No. 3 and No. 4.
At No. 5 singles, Danna Galeano blanked Malaik Muhammad, 6-0, 6-0, to give Grambling State a 1-0 lead. Tanyaradwza Maguje beat Ta’miya Strickland, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 and Idah Longwe defeated Karissa Fenwick, 6-0, 6-0, to put the Lady Tigers on the verge of winning the match. Imperia Martinez sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cierra Fenwick.
On Sunday, the Lady Tigers dropped a 4-2 decision to Jackson State concluding the SWAC West Round-Up.
GSU (1-5 overall, 1-1 SWAC) fell behind 1-0 after Jackson State took the doubles point. JSU took a 2-0 advantage after a win at No. 1 singles, but the Tigers cut the lead to 2-1 as Keren Happuch Muswere defeated Oni Jones, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2.
JSU picked up a win at No. 3 to put them on the verge of winning the match but at No. 4, Imperia Martinez defeated Maria Martinez, 6-2, 7-5, with No. 5 and No. 6 still on the court. However, Jackson State sealed the match at No. 6.
The Lady Tigers tennis team continues SWAC play at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 with a road match against rival Southern.
