The Grambling State men’s basketball team bench was outscored 23-9 as GSU fell 60-56 to Jackson State university Saturday afternoon at Fredrick C. Hobdy Arena.
Grambling State (9-11 overall, 3-4 SWAC) trailed 28-24 at the break as the Tigers committed 14 first half turnovers while recording 17 turnovers for the game.
GSU used a 13-10 run in the start of the second half to cut Jackson State’s lead to 38-37 with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
However, Jackson State responded with a 16-6 run to set the score at 54-43 with seven minutes remaining in the game to secure the victory over the Tigers.
Ivy Smith paced Grambling State with 18 points and six turnovers.
Axel Mpoyo added nine points and DeVante Jackson chipped in eight points and five assists.
GSU shot 47 percent going 20-of-42 from the field.
Chris Howell led JSU (7-11 overall, 4-3 SWAC) recording a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Grambling State takes a week off and will return to will play host to Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center with a 5 p.m. contest on Feb. 2.
