Modern Artist to know: Zendaya

Zendaya Maree Coleman is a actress and singer. She was born on Sept. 1, 1996. She started her career appearing as a child model and backup dancer before rising to fame on Disney Channel. Zendaya broke out in her career as she lead Disney Channel’s sitcom “Shake It Up” as Rocky Blue. In 2013 she competed in Dancing with the Stars. A few years later she starred on another Disney sitcom, K.C Undercover.

Along with acting, Coleman is a singer. She started her career releasing a few independent singles, “Swag It Out” and “Watch Me”. In 2012 she signed to Hollywood Records and released her debut single “Replay”. Zendaya’s single hit 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 United States. She was born in Oakland, California. Zendaya has five older half-siblings on her father’s side. Her name derives from the African term “to give thanks”.

Zendaya released her debut book in 2013. The book is entittled “Between U and Me: How to Rock Your Tween Years with Style and Confidence”. She is also big in the fashion scene.

While working on “Shake It Up” she started working on a clothing line inspired by her colorful dance wardrobe. In 2016 she launched her own clothing line Daya By Zendaya. Zendaya was also a guest judge on Project Runway. She is a vegetarian and in 2018 Coleman won a Teen’s Choice Award.
