Grambling sports round-up

Tiger Alum

Grambling State University has three former student-athletes playing professional football.

Chester Rogers, of the Indianapolis Colts, was targeted one time and registered zero catches, as the Colts defeated the Oakland Raiders, 42-28.

Chad Williams, of the Arizona Cardinals, was targeted twice and had two catches on the night as the Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 18-15.

Trenton Scott, of the Los Angles Chargers,  who was in attendance of the Grambling State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff game, where the Tigers came out on top, as the Chargers had a bye week.

 

Football

DanQuarian Fields was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week, as he registered 18 tackles in a 45-38 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Teammate De’Arius Christmas was chosen as a 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy finalist.

 

Women’s bowling

GSU women’s bowling opened up the 2018 season picking up a 4-0 victory over Alabama A&M.

Laurencia Harmon led GSU with a 178.2 total pinfall average.

 

Cross country

The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the 2018 SWAC Cross Country Championship with the women taking a second place finish.

The Lady Tigers finished nine points shy of winner Alabama State.

The men captured a third place finish in Clinton, Miss.

 

Baseball

The Grambling State Tigers head baseball coach James Cooper announced, GSU will host a Black and Gold World Series, at Wilbert Ellis Field at 4:30 p.m.

The best-of-three series begins on Nov. 6.

 

Men’s basketball

Ivy Smith Jr. was named Preseason All-SWAC as well as All First-Team. Teammate Devante Jackson also made the list as he was named Second-Team.

 

Volleyball

GSU is set to close out the 2018 regular season at Southern University at 5 p.m.

The SWAC Tournament begins Nov. 16 in Itta Bena, Miss.

 

Women’s basketball

Shakyla Hill was named to the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award watch list, as well as SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Hill has already been named All-Southwestern Athletic Conference First-Team, as well SWAC Preseason Player of the Year along with Defensive Player of the Year.

 

Women’s soccer

Grambling State looks to repeat last year’s tournament success. GSU is the top seed and will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in SWAC tournament play. Seeking their first tournament title since 2016.
