Members of Alpha Theta Chapter kicked off their weekend at Zion Traveler Baptist Church.
Throwing it back to the 90’s the women of the Alpha Theta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., used the theme to coordinate events with popular TV sitcoms.
Grambling were encouraged to “tune in” during the week of Oct.14-20.
Events such as “Full House”, “Smart Guy” and “A Different World” were used to synchronize with the days of the week.
Deszia Alfred, a senior political science major from Houston, Texas, said the purpose of the week was indeed a very serious matter.
“We wanted to give back to the community, instead of just doing things for ourselves,” Alfred, chair of the week, said.
Keeping up with Alpha Theta might have been hard this week as the ladies were on a mission to provide service to all mankind.
“Full House” kicked off the week, as members of Alpha Theta gathered on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Zion Traveler Baptist Church for worship.
On Monday Oct. 15, “Smart Guy”, also referred to as “Money Monday”, was an event geared toward teaching students at Lincoln Prep how to effectively save and budget their funds.
Because AKA strongly believes in building your economic legacy, the members spoke about the importance of money management and even made piggy banks with the kids.
“My favorite event that we hosted was our CAP program because we were able to educate 80 juniors and seniors about what our institution has to offer and why they should make Grambling their number one choice for college,” Alpha Theta Vice President Miniya Shabazz, a senior mass communication major from Laurel, Md., said.
Entering “A Different World” on Tuesday, Oct.16, Alpha Theta brought together guests from across campus to speak to the students of Lincoln Prep. Speakers at the event included Adarian Williams, Miss Grambling State University, JaMariea’ Davis-Miller, the Office of Admissions, Department of Housing, and Financial Aid.
The special guests covered topics such as attendance, ACT scores, housing options, and requirements for college.
On Wednesday Oct 17th they hosted “Sister Sister” at the Alpine Nursing Home where they played bingo with the residents to improve their mental and emotional health. Alfred also wanted to emphasize that it helped improve their socialization and short term memory skills.
It was time for a little “Home Improvement” on Thursday Oct. 18th as the ladies had a conversation with Lincoln Prep. about stress and show the students fun ways to relieve it by making stress slime. They were “Saved by The Bell” on Friday Oct. 19th as they gathered at Eddie the Tiger to pray with the GSU Football team and uplift them with encouraging words before the team went on to compete against opponent, Alcorn State University.
The event hosted on Saturday Oct. 20th titled “Family Matters” was a donation event for Soles 4 Souls. This is a non-profit organization, where they process and ship shoes to destinations around the world populated with people of color.
Residents were able to donate gently worn shoes, glasses and pillow cases to any member of Alpha Theta.
As a result of this event, the women were able to collect over 50 gently worn or new shoes for donation to the Soles 4 Souls organization.
The ladies of Alpha Theta feel the week was a “definite success.” Shabazz recalls on a memory stating, “I loved putting smiles on the children’s faces we impacted during the week.
