Soccer blanks Lady Braves and Lady Devil’s

The Grambling State University soccer team blanked both Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend mactch-up Sept. 21-23.

GSU vs. Alabama State (7-0 win)

The Lady Tigers kicked off their first game against Alcorn State on Friday. The Lady Tigers rolled to their largest victory since 2007 by defeating the Lady Braves 7-0. The Lady Tigers had a huge advantage in the 17th minute mark of the game, when sophomore Kaylee Holt assisted on freshman Kailey Pena’s goal to push the lead to 2-0. Pena registered another goal in the 20th minute on a  assist from Jasmine Smith to extend the Tigers lead to 3-0. Senior Kiawna Mounts added a goal in the 24th minute mark  to push the advantage, 4-0. Freshman Alysssa Ozuna got into the action as well rounding out the first-half scoring in the 30th minute.

 

After the break, the Lady Tigers did not show any signs of slowing down and continued their strong performance to the finish.

 

Kaylee Holt continued to lead the way for the Lady Tigers scoring just three minutes into the half  to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. 

 

Freshman Haylee O’Leary capped the evening with the final goal for the Tigers in the 77th minute for the 7-0 victory. 

 

It had been over 10 years that the Lady Tigers have won by a seven-goal difference. 

 

The winning for the Lady Tigers did not conclude on Friday evening, but continued through Sunday as well. 

 

GSU vs. Mississippi Valley State (7-0 win)

In the Sunday matchup, the Lady Tigers defeated Mississippi Valley State 2-0. 

 

It was a weekend of shutouts as Grambling prevailed their second consecutive shutout. 

 

Unlike Friday, the Lady Tigers had a slower start after a scoreless opening nine minutes. Things shifted in the Tigers favor as they earned a free kick just outside of the penalty area. 

 

Alyssa Ozona kick attempt banged off the bottom of the crossbar, as Mississippi’s goalkeeper Sydney Newport was unable to corral the shot. 

 

The goal gave Grambling momentum as they took a 1-0 lead. 

 

The Lady Tigers doubled the margin in the 27th minute with  help from  Senior Brittany Terry and Sophomore Jasmine Smith. Terry and Smith assisted on a Kaylee Holt’s goal as Grambling State took a 2-0 lead into the second half. The Lady Tigers pair of first half-goals and their solid defense was enough to earn the Tigers its second consecutive SWAC win. 

 

The Lady Tigers made their defensive presence felt early in the contest. Mississippi Valley State had a chance to cut in the deficit in the 69th minute as GSU freshman Rita Siaha saved Karenth Zabala-Terraazas’s kick, to keep the score at 2-0. 

 

UP Next 

The Lady Tigers will begin a road slate for its next three SWAC matches, starting Friday at 7 p.m. with a trip to the National capital to face Howard. 

 

Then it’s  off to rival Southern (Oct. 5) and Jackson State (Oct. 7) which will conclude the road stretch for the Lady Tigers.
