On Sept. 14, 2018, The Texas Club hosted a “Sweet Treat Meet and Greet” to introduce the face of Texas to Grambling State University. This event was held on the yard between the Tiger Express and GSU’s Bookstore.

During the event, a variety of Texas music was played and different treats with refreshments was served.  Members of the Texas Club and other students were there dancing and engaging with one another.

Veronica Sanders, 20, a junior majoring in mass communication from Houston, the President of the Texas Club, joined when she was a freshman in 2016.  “The past President of the Texas Club gave me hope of continuing at GSU because I did not have a sense of belonging and I was wanting to transfer to a Texas school. He basically encouraged me to stay at Grambling and ever since then it stuck with me” said Sanders. Her goal is to get the club back active for the fall 2018 semester by networking with other organizations and sharing Texas culture with Louisiana.

“My experience so far being a part of Texas Club has been nothing short of amazing,” said Sanders. “It has given me a sense of responsibility and leadership to guide other people on this campus. I have been learning as I go, as it is my first rodeo, so it has been quite the experience” said Sanders.

Sanders also has had support from her E-Board and Miss Texas, Courtney Brown. She is excited and cannot wait for what’s in store for the Texas Club.

Although this was the Texas Club’s first event, they have a lot of plans coming up for this semester.  On Sept. 19, they will have a table set up at the Organization Fair.  On Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m., the Texas Club will have their first official Texas Club Membership informational meeting in the Favrot Student Union room 243. Prospective members will be able to ask questions, meet the E-Board and more. Lastly, Mark your calendars for Oct. 4 because the Texas Club will be hosting “Painting with A Twist: Chopped and Screwed Edition” in the Tiger Express from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Kaylyn Johnson, 21, a junior majoring in Psychology from Grand Prairie, Texas is a member of the Texas Club. “I wanted to join the Texas Club because I felt like Grambling does not show Texas a lot of love. They only play one song and we have to represent out hardest for that song. Sometimes, I want our culture to be shown off and our music to be played more often,” said Johnson.

Since her joining the club, the experience for Johnson has been amazing, and she attributes her amazing time to the great leadership. “Working with Veronica, she’s such a sweet girl who has a lot going for herself. She made the first event amazing, and fun for us to go out there and represent ourselves”.

The Texas Club does allow students who are not from Texas participate in any event that they have. To join the club, students have to live in Texas for one year or more or be a native of Texas.
