The City of Grambling’s 44th annual Juneteenth Heritage Festival will be held June 12-18 beginning with a poetry contest to be held on Sunday.

The event will be centered around the theme of “Building Our Future…Honoring Our Legends.”

The festival will feature activities and entertainment for all ages, including a parade, pageant, bake-off, poetry contest, outdoor concert, health fair, food and craft vendors, and an outdoor play area for children.

The festival is sponsored jointly by the City of Grambling and the Grambling Economic Development Corporation and commemorates the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation that signaled the end of slavery in the United States.

The activities will be held at various venues around the city and are free and open to the public.

“With this celebration comes the remembrance of the promise of freedom the Proclamation gave to many enslaved African Americans and the bloody path America took by delaying it,” said Edward Jones, mayor of Grambling.

There will be souvenir booklets and Juneteenth shirts available for purchase.

For information about becoming a vendor or participating in the parade, please call City Hall at 318.247.6720, or visit the City’s website at www.cityofgrambling.org, or on Facebook at City of Grambling.
