Favrot Student Union Board  to sponsor activities, auditions

The Favrot Student Union Board is releasing its schedule of activities for the months of March and April. 

If you are interested in being an opening act in the 2016 Tiger Fest concert to be held on April 14 please bring your CD to Room 221 in the Favrot Student Union or mail it to Grambling State University, Favrot Student Union Board, 403 Main St. – Campus Box 4234, Grambling, LA 71245. The deadline to submit is March 17. This is open to the public. However, enrolled students must not have a judicial record within the past year.

Upcoming events will include voting for the 2016 Student Choice Awards on March 7. Follow @whatsupwithfsub on social media to get instructions on how to vote. Last day to vote is March 31. The awards show will be held during Tiger Fest on April 11. Tiger Fest is scheduled for April 10-15.

 

Student Government Association announces schedule for meetings 

The Grambling State University Student Government Association officials are encouraging students to attend the monthly general student body meeting. The next general student body meetings are set for March 17 and April 21. All meetings are held in the Favrot Student Union Theater at 6 p.m.

Grambling’s Intramural Center to offer additional operating hours

The Department of Recreation and Intramural Center is now operating with new hours. The center open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays and closed on Saturdays.

Terry Lilly will teach step aerobics from Mondays through Thursday at 5:15 p.m. (step aerobics) and dance aerobics at 8 p.m. (dance aerobics). Yoga will also be held in the center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Capree Bramel.

 

Student Counseling and Wellness Resource Center to host sessions

The Student Counseling and Wellness Resource Center will be hosting Wellness Group every Tuesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through March 15. Sessions will be held in the “Tiger Room” Student Counseling Center.

GSU students, faculty, staff can still receive free flu vaccinations

Flu shots are still available.  Free flu vaccinations will be given by Walgreens Pharmacy on Tuesday, March 8 from 9 a.m. until 1p.m. at Foster-Johnson Health Center.

St Luke’s Episcopal Church to  hold student Canterbury Assoc.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Chapel will hold its annual Celebration honoring the life of Absalom Jones on Sunday, March 6.  The celebration will begin with the Eucharist Service at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon.  Both events will take place at St. Luke’s church.

The speaker will be Rev. Kim Jackson of Atlanta, Georgia.  She is a dynamic, inspiring and visionary person who will share her thoughts on the theme for this occasion.

The 2016-2017 student FAFSA filing time is fastly approaching

The FAFSA application for the 2016-2017 Academic Year is now available on FAFSA.ed.gov. Please complete the application after you and/or your parents have filed taxes for 2015.

If you and/or your parents are not required by the federal government to file taxes, please complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA now, said Gavin R. Hamms, director of the Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships. He can be contacted at or hammsg@gram.edu.

The priority deadline is April 15, but please act immediately!

Congressional Black Caucus offers summer internships

Grambling State University students may apply for Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. internships. There are three programs available.

The internship programs include the Congressional Internship Program-$3000 stipend; Emerging Leaders Internship Program-$4000 stipend and The Communications Internship Program-$4000. Rooms are free.  

Students must meet the following requirements: US citzenship or a permit to work in the US for duration of the internship; Active full-time enrollment in college or recent graduation for college within twelve months of internship application; completion of at least 30 credits towards undergraduate degree; minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale; and have demonstrated interest in public serice, governance, and the policy-making process.  

Selection – In order to move forward to the interview process students must first submit an approved resume to Dr. Shelia Fobbs, Director, Office of Career Services, who will submit the approved resume to Caucus.  Upon receiving the resume,  students will be given other necessary items for application.  Interested students should see Center Staff no later than March 31 in order to have time to complete other necessary information.

 

GSU office of Retention tutorial schedule ready

The Grambling State University Office of Retention has announced its tutorial schedule for the semester.

Tutorial for biology 103, 104, 113, and 114, for chemistry 111, and for English 101 and 102 will be held through April 29.

 

Tutorial in mathematics open to all students

The Quality Enhancement Plan at Grambling State University kicked off its Mathematics Clinic earlier this week.  The clinic will be available Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Carver Hall, Room 136 until April 28.  

The Mathematics Clinic is an opportunity for students to receive individual assistance from Mathematics faculty outside the classroom.  All mathematics students may participate, however students registered in MATH147 (Pre-calculus I) and MATH148 (Pre-calculus II) are required to attend.

Legacy Square Brick campaign: Be a part of history Phase II

The first bricks have been installed in Legacy Square and we are well on our way to creating an awesome display of love of GSU. So many have viewed the bricks and are pleased at the outcome. Orders are already coming in to ensure that the bricks will be installed by graduation, Spring 2016! (Orders and payments must be received by 03/01/16 for May installation.) Burn camp for girls deadline nears

March 15 is deadline to apply for burn camp for girls

Angel Faces is looking for adolescent girls who have suffered severe burns or disfiguring trauma to attend its annual healing retreat June 20-26 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. 

The retreat is designed to inspire and nurture the girls to process their adversity and to help boost self-confidence.

The retreat is designed for girls ages 12-18. The week long retreat is free to participants. The $4,500 fees are taken care of by the sponsors of AngelFaces.  

The founder of the Angel Faces, Lesia Cartelli, was burned herself in a gas explosion at the age of 9. She spent over 20 years developing and directing after-care programs for children and adults. 

 “We take girls who hurt inside and out, who may be in a spiral of self-pity, anger and depression… ,” said Cartelli. “We teach them to get out of the spiral by embracing the pain as a blessing.”

Applications are posted online at angelfaces.com. The deadline for applications to be submitted is March 15.

 

RPAR softball leagues games to begin April 25

Fresh cut grass, lined infield, ring of a bat, a diving catch, sweating, bleeding, and diving into home.

Not a bad way to spend an evening out at the Ruston Parks and Recreation softball fields.

RPAR softball games begin Monday, April 25 The divisions are Coed, Men’s E, Men’s Church and Coed Church. Games are played by United States Specialty Sports Association rules.

The team fee of $305 is due Wednesday, April 20.

 On Page 3 in a story titled “Student walks in NYFW,” SBFW and Marie Janae were two separate shows. Marie Janae wasn’t a part of SBFW but an independent high fashion designer that had her own show during fashion week.  Le Carnivale fashion show will be at the DuSable Museum of African American History not Gustavo.
