48th Calendar Girl Pageant set

By STAFF REPORT
On March 3, 2016

The 48th Annual Miss Calendar Girl Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, March 12 at 7 p.m. in the T.H. Harris Auditorium. “New York State of Mind: Fashion week 2016” is the theme for the semi-formal event in which six contestants will vie for the Cover Girl title and 15 for the months.

The first Calendar Girl Pageant was  presented on March 24, 1969, at Grambling State University. The setting was in T.H. Harris Auditorium, and the décor was bright orange with a green crown trimmed in white.

This new  concept of entertainment was sponsored by the Favrot Student Union Advisory  Board.

The idea was to choose a Cover Girl, 12 Calendar Girls for each of the calendar months and to sponsor a social affair to honor the pageants’ winners each month.

Since its initial staging, the pageant has  grown to give the winners scholarships.

A selective group of outstanding personalities served as judges in selecting  the winners. Because of several categories, the pageant was a two-night event.

The preliminaries were held the first night and all contestants were judged in casual  wear along with Cover Girls in the area of self-expression.  During the second night, all  the contestants were judged on bathing suits and formal wear.

The talent portion was for Cover Girl contestants only.

This year’s contestants will be judged on daywear, swimwear, and eveningwear.

Only Cover Girl contestants are judged on talent and interview. Interviews are conducted a few hours before the pageant.

This year’s Cover Girl contestants are Ya’Lisha Gatewood from Shreveport, Louisiana; Zia Gordon from Monroe, Louisiana; Jamika Jones from St. Andrew, Jamaica; Jimmitriv Roberson from Arcadia, Louisiana; Kanyonn Stegall from Dallas, Texas and Taylor Stewart, Columbia, Maryland.

The Calendar Girl contestants are Jordan Bailey from Chicago, Illinois; La’Brittany Beene from Haynesville, Louisiana; Ashley Brown from Arcadia, Louisiana; Stasha Burris from Bogalusa, Louisiana; Riki Burroughs from Las Vegas, Nevada; Aviana Cornelius from Shreveport, Louisiana; Katerra Dooleyfrom New Orleans, Louisiana; Erika Goode-Perry, Gary, Indiana; Charisma Green from Atlanta, Georgia; Breana Hall from Alexandria, Louisiana; Lanita Hughes from Beverly Hills, California; Mecca Muhammad from Chicago, Illinois; Marion Owens from Chicago, Illinois; Zaire Sayers from Denver, Colorado and Danielle Williams from Baton Rouge, Louisiana
