Favrot Student Union Board to sponsor Java House, auditions

The Favrot Student Union Board is releasing its upcoming schedule of activities for the month of February. 

The Union Board will sponsor a Mardi Gras Masquerade Party today at 7 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room. Java House at 7 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room February 15. A General Assembly at 5:30 p.m. February 16 in the Black and Gold Room.

Tigerfest Talent Show auditions is set for Feb. 15 & 16 at 7 p.m. in the T.H. Harris Auditorium. For more information contact Khadijah Freeman at khadijah_34@yahoo.com.

Cup decorating  will be at 6:40 p.m. in the Atrium on February 16 and then on February 17 Speed Dating will be at 6 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room.

 

Student Government Association announces schedule for meetings 

The Grambling State University Student Government Association officials are encouraging student to attend the monthly general body meeting. The dates are: February 18, March 17, and April 21. All meetings are held in the Favrot Student Union Theater at 6 p.m.

The meetings are not open only students, but faculty and administration as well. For additional information or concerns contact Jonathan Wallace at 318-303-2927.

 

Grambling president to speak at Town Hall meeting on Feb. 11

 Grambling State University president’s Town Hall Meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Betty E. Smith School of Nursing auditorium. 

Dr. Willie Larkin and senior administrative leaders at GSU will host the meeting to answer questions, address concerns and listen to comments related to the proposed mid-year budget cuts.  Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community are encouraged to attend, along with media. 

Those who are unable to attend the meeting, but would like to participate, may submit questions via email to Mitzi LaSalle at lasallem@gram.edu. ‘Acts of Faith’ exhibition to be on display in Dunbar Art Gallery

An exhibition of selected works from the Sutton Collection of American & African American Art will end at GSU on Thursday, Feb. 25. 

The Art on Purpose will present “Creating a Lasting Legacy” , in which the collectors will talk with Cheryl Sutton on Tuesday, February 16 at 11 a.m. in Dunbar Hall Room 148.  On February 15 at 2:30 p.m. there will be an African American Art History Lecture. 

 The Dunbar Art Gallery is open from 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.–noon Friday located at the intersection of Sandle and Hutchinson Street in Grambling.  Accommodations are available for large groups and those with special needs. For information, call 318-274-2274. 

 

Deadline nears to submit research to Spring International Conference

   The deadline for submissions for the Spring International Conference of the International Organization of Social Sciences and Behavioral Research (IOSSBR) is Monday, Feb. 15.

The IOSSBR presentations typically have five papers in two-hour-long session, while the poster sessions are one hour long. Best paper awards are voted during each session.

To submit an abstract or for more information, visit www.iossbr.com. The Spring 2016 IOSSBR International Conference will be held March 9-11 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

 

Delta Grambling alum chapter to present ‘Go Red Day’ Friday

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Grambling Alumnae Chapter will present a “Go Red Day for Women” luncheon on Friday, February 5 at noon. The event will be held in the New Rocky Valley Fellowship Hall in Grambling.

There will be a presentation “From a Physician’s View” by Janice Ford, M.D. and the speaker will be Gloria Moore, a survivor. Lunch is free and donations for the American Heart Association will be accepted which are tax deductible. Those attending are asked to wear red to help raise awareness.

 

Women’s Fellowship Ministry will present ‘A Valentine Gala’

    Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church located on 2586 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in Grambling will have a dinner and theatrical presentation on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.         

    Tickets are $25 per person, for adults only. The attire is semi-formal or formal only. The deadline to purchase tickets is Feb. 5 and tickets will be required for admission.

Championship wrestling star to sign autographs on Saturday

“The LoverBoy Dennis Lane” and the superstars of the Ringside Championship Wrestling, based out of Lafayette, will be at Spivey’s Fried Chicken along with the tag team champions Pain and Protection on Saturday, February 6 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

The professional wrestler will be signing autographed pictures for fans in the Grambling area.  Autographed pictures will be a cost of $5 each and personal photos will be $3 each. More information on the wrestlers can be found on Facebook by searching ‘RCW Wrestling’.

 

Local church to hold ‘Sweetheart’ banquet Saturday, February 6

The Annual Sweet Heart Banquet will be hosted at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church on 228 Watkins Road in Jonesboro, Louisiana on Saturday, February 6 at 6 p.m. 

The guest speaker will be the overseer Nadine McCardia from Kingdom First Church 208 Vinson Street in Jonesboro, Louisiana and the theme will be “It’s All About Love.”

The scripture is going to be on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” 

 

Grambling State student to attend New York Fashion Week

Diamond Nicholson, a junior marketing major has been invited to attend New York’s Fashion Week February 15 through February 17. She will be the guest of Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson and her style team. She will be attending the Zac Posen and Michael Kors collection presentations. 

Diamond’s aspiration of becoming a fashion merchandiser/buyer for a major clothing conglomerate after graduating is her main focus. Nicholson is looking forward to attending Fashion Week in New York City to learn and experience various components of the fashion industry on an international stage.

Diamond is an honor student, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Miss February 2016. She is the daughter of former Miss Grambling, Marva Nichols Griffin and former G-Man football star Thomas Griffin (stepfather) of Chicago, Illinois.

Get new or renewed passport early

The U.S. State Department is advising that if you’re heading out of the country this year and need a new or renewed passport, apply as soon as possible to avoid delays.  We’re relaying this message so you can alert your travelers.

As reported in a Forbes article, the U.S. State Department is anticipating longer than average wait times for passport processing over the coming months.  They anticipate that it will take about 6 weeks for standard processing, up from about four weeks in 2015.
