What is Career Services?

As we all know, there is an endless number of careers to choose from, but one must be ready. Why not get the proper help to mold yourself as the perfect candidate for the job.

If looking for the appropriate help, Career Services at Grambling State University is your destination.

Their mission is to enhance the overall educational experience of a student by assisting with educating the “total” student. It is the center’s goal to give many professional experiences that will mimic those found in everyday life.

The many seminars and programs they host will create opportunities for potential employers, students, faculty, and staff of Grambling State University to engage in partnerships that will meet the needs of an ever-changing society.

The Career Services staff encourages students to come in from their freshman year to get started on developing their skills.

The main focus is to help students develop survival skills as well as proper business techniques and work etiquette.

“Students are provided with personal as well as professional development. We want to give them experiences like they will find in the community, so they can be prepared for that specific job interview,” said Dr. Shelia Fobbs, director of the office of Career Services.

Dr. Fobbs encourages students to come in, when desiring needs of personal difficulties.

There are sessions for such situations, such as: self-esteem issues, relationship problems, and other personal problems.

“My experience at the Career Services center was wonderful. The staff was very welcoming and helped me with everything I needed,” said Akia Quillens, freshman biology major from New Orleans.

She also expressed how she thinks students in need should seek counseling from one of the counselors if they need someone to talk to.

Career Services can be very resourceful for students. There are many internships sitting on the desk waiting for applicants.

Casey Harris, graduating senior kinesiology major, from New Orleans said, “I am thankful for the many emails I receive about internships and even scholarships from Career Services. I love how they keep me updated with their events as well.”

It is helpful for student-athletes to know there is a ‘Etiquette Part 1’ session for them to attend. “Etiquette Part 1” is for Grambling State athletes only, which will be held in the Washington-Johnson Complex Room 100, on Thursday, February 11. The session is to show athletes the proper manner and discipline they should maintain during job related events, as well as social events.

There are some upcoming events that students should schedule themselves to attend.
