UL System proposes budget cuts

After former governor Bobby Jindal’s announcement of over $370 million to be cut from higher education, the University of Louisiana System schools have

planned for reductions of both 40 percent and 60 percent in state funding.

In a past interview with The News-Star ULS former president Sandra Woodley said

that when dealing with cuts of this magnitiude, “all institutions are vulnerable.”

A proposed total of $38 million could be cut from the nine universities which

includes (Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, McNeese

State University, Nichols State University, Northwestern State

University, Southeastern State University, University of Louisiana

Lafayette, University of Louisiana in Monroe, and University of New Orleans).

If the proposed cut is implemented, Grambling will have to remove $2.5 million

from their operating budget, which could result in employees being laid off and

certain courses being removed.

While this is only a proposed plan, the university will have the opportunity

to address the matter at hand. Governor John Bel Edwards will be on

campus, Thursday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Gov. Edwards will meet and talk with students, faculty and staff from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
