GSU organization works with health fair

Grambling State University sociology, psychology majors, under the direction of Professor LaWanna Gunn-Williams, hosted a mental health booth at the Annual Lincoln Parish Head Start Health Fair during the month of May. The event was held at the Ruston Civic Center."The mental health booth is an annual activity undertaken by the majors of Department of Sociology and Psychology," said Dr. Gunn-Williams.

The students distributed stress management, positive discipline, and parenting literature to Head Start staff, students and parents and to community members. In addition, they spoke with students concerning proper nutrition and managing stress.

"Our majors led the Head Start students in physical exercise routines, emphasizing the importance of physical activity on mental health. I believe the presentations were well received," explained Gunn-Williams.

The Department of Sociology and Psychology students participating in this year's health fair were actually placed at the Lincoln Parish Head Start Center during the Spring 2009 semester for their psychology practicum experience. The students are Jade Williams, Byron Lewis, Dr. Gunn-Williams, Cierra Williams, Rachiel Thompkins, Andrea McCallister, Brittany King, Danielle Butler, and Orshay Stewart.
